Why are mortgage rates going up?

Mortgage rates have gone from 6.11% in mid/end of Sept to 6.91% in a little over 4 weeks. Election coverage is crowding out news on this, so I just want to put this chart up here. Why are mortgage rates going up?
It is incredibly hard to predict where mortgage rates are going. Most economists are chalking it up to a mix of news, but economists have not come to a consensus. Greg McBride at Bankrate had the following to say, “The Fed’s more aggressive half-point rate cut in September increased the odds that the economy continues to grow, avoids recession, and that inflation could be higher than anticipated,” he said. “With that outlook, long-term interest rates – both Treasury yields and mortgage rates – have moved higher, reversing some of the decline seen in preceding months.”
What you should do if you are in the home buying/mortgage process: make sure you understand about locking rates. Even if you’re working with someone else, I’m happy to help you understand the nuances of this, or if you are a real estate agent I can help you understand what this means for your clients.
Also, now is the time to make sure you are shopping the best rates. Contrary to what others will tell you, mortgage rate direction is very hard to predict, these are 30 year loans, so they are subject to a whole stew of economic factors.
